Lizzo is a role model for body positivity, the kind of endlessly confident woman who isn’t afraid to flaunt her curves and who unashamedly loves herself no matter what anybody else says. She’s a unique kind of artist, not least because she frequently whips out a flute and is known for highly energetic stage shows. Lizzo also staunchly refuses to conform to societal norms for female beauty. She changes the boundaries rather than forcing herself to fit into them.
She also unabashedly loves to eat, as an interview with Nasty Gal headlined "Lizzo Be Eating" (after the star’s own Instagram handle) enthusiastically demonstrates. The interview actually took place over a platter of jerk chicken, with Lizzo gushing about her lifelong love of Shake Shack and offering her opinions on which cities boast the best cuisines. Lizzo loves food so much, in fact, that she toyed with the idea of being a critic, hence the Insta account, but sadly, after just three reviews, it petered out. However, Lizzo still be eating, and she’s happy to discuss it in depth with anyone who will listen.
As a "broke" vegetarian, Lizzo often ate this
Although Lizzo harbored dreams of being paid to eat out at her favorite restaurants, she was always destined to be in music. As she told The Cut in February 2019, back in the early days of her career, after dropping out of college to pursue her passion full time, Lizzo would frequently sleep in her car. Joining her first band offered a floor to sleep on at least, usually in their rehearsal space or at the drummer’s house.
And, if Lizzo happened to show up around dinnertime, even better. "I’d be like, ‘Hey, come hang out! You got some food? Let’s kick it!’" she recalled. Lizzo was a vegetarian at the time, so if the group was having chicken and rice, she’d eat just the rice — even if it was soaked in chicken juices. "I was like, ‘I’m too broke to have morals,’" the Detroit native joked.
This is Lizzo’s favorite food
Lizzo can make any setting her own personal playground, but when there’s food involved she’s really in her element. While chatting to The Cut, she partook in some traditional Caribbean food at a restaurant in Brooklyn, noting that if there are only Black people in the kitchen, it’s usually a good sign. After ordering oxtails, jerk wings, and plantains and garlic sauce, with margaritas to chase it all down, Lizzo revealed her all-time fave.
"Plantain is my favorite food in the f***ing world," she gushed, after admitting those in front of her didn’t even require sauce (but the sauce in question was so good she had to use it regardless). It’s easy to see why Lizzo loves the fruit as much as she does.
As Healthline explained, plantains are a less sweet, starchier variety of bananas that are a major component of diets in tropical countries. Unlike "dessert bananas," plantains are cooked before eating and, nutritionally speaking, they’re similar to potatoes but contain more vitamins and minerals.
According to Lizzo, this is the "best fast food restaurant on the planet"
The battle of the burgers is one that’s played out since the beginning of time — or at least the beginning of fast food — and looks set to rage on for the foreseeable future. Whether you prefer In-N-Out, Shake Shack, or some other variety depends largely on where you live and what chain of fast food restaurant is easily accessible to you. Although Lizzo is a major Shake Shack proponent because, as she told Nasty Gal, it was her "first gourmet fast food experience." However, when it comes to the flutist’s go-to, there’s no competition.
"Whataburger is the best fast food restaurant on the planet," she stated, arguing the Texas chain is superior to In-N-Out, which originated in California. As Lizzo explained, "It’s just better — it’s better ingredients, they’re not all over the place, they’re just in Texas, so they can focus there, and they have breakfast taquitos with cheese and egg and hashbrowns in them. So delicious. Oh! And a honey butter chicken biscuit!" Well, we can’t argue with that.
Being vegan makes Lizzo feel "very lit"
Lizzo flirted with being a vegetarian for several years, even if it meant sometimes imbibing meat juices just to eat, but, in 2020, Lizzo went full-on vegan. "As a new vegan, I’m enjoying exploring flavors from plants and plant-based proteins! Every journey is personal and deserves to be celebrated," she gushed in the caption for a TikTok video helpfully detailing her new, super-clean diet in all its deliciously colorful glory.
Assuaging the fears of those worried she was going soft, Lizzo assured fans, "I feel very lit and full." The singer has never been afraid of working hard in the kitchen, proudly telling Cool Accidents that, although she rarely has the time anymore, she "CAN cook [her] a** off." In fact, Lizzo said she can make absolutely anything if given the opportunity to do so. Going vegan, then, was just another challenge Lizzo couldn’t wait to surmount.
Lizzo typically starts her day with a green smoothie
Although Lizzo has been quick to note she doesn’t necessarily eat the same thing every single day, her TikTok videos detailing what she chooses give an idea of a typical day for her food-wise. "Disclaimer, this is not every day, but this was a pretty average one," she explained simply in one video.
To start her day off right, Lizzo opts for a super-healthy green breakfast smoothie made with coconut water, either kale or spinach depending on her mood, and some frozen fruit. In April 2019, Lizzo told Cool Accidents she’s particularly good at whipping up breakfast foods, whether it’s "eggs, potatoes, omelette, French toast, pancakes," so clearly this kind of nutritious smoothie is no trouble.

Lizzo’s usual lunch is light but filling
When it comes to lunch, Lizzo opts for a colorful salad made with kale, red cabbage, broccoli, avocado, white onions, and carrots. The emphasis on kale for both breakfast and lunch is not surprising considering, as Healthline advises, it’s one of the healthiest and most nutritionally beneficial foods in existence and the best green you can eat. It’s positively loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants too.
By eating a colorful salad, Lizzo is eating the rainbow, as children are often encouraged to do. As Food Revolution explained, fruits and vegetables contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, many of which have their own distinctive colors. Eating a diversity of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to fortify your body with a wide range of these important vitamins and minerals. Sticking a load of ’em in a salad is an even easier way to do it, too.
Lizzo swapped out her go-to snack for a healthier variety
There’s nothing better (and perhaps unhealthier) than sitting down in front of the TV with a massive bag of potato chips and just devouring them, especially while binge-watching a familiar fave. Lizzo’s snack of choice was once Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, but she admitted to giving them up when embarking on her vegan lifestyle in 2020. The spicy snack was also causing her acid-reflux to flare up, Lizzo explained in a TikTok video, so whether she went vegan or not, the delicious snack probably wasn’t going to survive much longer.
Plant-based alternative Lesser Evil Paleo Puffs have provided a welcome alternative, with Lizzo noting, "I dip them in hummus. Badda boom, badda snack!" The switch makes total sense, as a one-ounce serving of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos contains 160 calories, 11 grams of fat, and 10 percent of the day’s recommended intake of sodium, according to Eat This Much. The same amount of Lesser Evil Paleo Puffs, meanwhile, contains 130 calories, 6 grams of fat, and around eight percent of the day’s recommended intake of sodium, according to their official site.
Lizzo’s dinners are a vegan twist on a family fave
When it comes to dinner, Lizzo is all about comfort food, albeit a healthier take on it. As revealed on TikTok, Lizzo prepares Shroomeats Mushroom Balls, which are 100 percent vegan, meatless meatballs. The star explained that they’re a "truffle chickpea mushroom ball thing." Lizzo serves them up with a side of quinoa and some salad.
According to Healthline, chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans) are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that also aid digestion and weight management and even protect against certain diseases. They’re also loaded with plant-based protein, making them a go-to for vegans.
Quinoa, meanwhile, isn’t just a favorite for posh celebs, it’s also a complete protein boasting all nine amino acids, making it nearly as protein-rich as chickpeas. As Forbes noted, quinoa also includes iron, twice as much fiber as other grains, and is rich in magnesium and manganese, among many other important nutrients. Not only will Lizzo feel fuller following a dinner including both of these nutrient-rich foods, but her insides will thank her for it too.
Lizzo still enjoys dessert
Lizzo may be a vegan, but that doesn’t mean she has to forgo treats altogether. Although she admitted on TikTok to not particularly liking diet soda, the singer found a vegan diet cola variety she liked because, as she put it, "I needed some sparkles in my throat." And as for dessert, the "Juice" hitmaker indulges in a peanut butter and jelly smoothie, made with peanut butter, frozen strawberries, oats, oat milk, vanilla protein powder, and, as the singer joked, "love from Jesus."
The strawberries will give Lizzo the sugar kick she’s craving from a dessert while the peanut butter and protein powder provide the necessary protein to keep her feeling full. Unlike your standard junk food, this means she won’t experience a sugar crash or require another "hit" later on. Additionally, oat milk is a solid base for the smoothie as it is a nutrient-rich alternative to traditional cow’s milk that may even assist bone and heart health, according to Healthline.
Hangover foods can be healthy too, according to Lizzo
It’s tough to eat healthy at the best of times, never mind when you’re hungover after a long night of partying hard. But Lizzo isn’t one to back down from a challenge and, although she admitted on TikTok that she "used to crave cheesy eggs" when hungover, she found a vegan alternative to hit the spot. The singer uses Just Egg, a plant-based alternative to eggs, and mixes it with a carne asada-style bean and corn mixture, topped off with a handful of spinach and vegan cheese. And voilà! A healthy breakfast scramble.
Vegan bacon is Lizzo’s side dish of choice – and the star knows exactly how to make the vegan variety more bacony. "I like to cook it in maple syrup so it gets nice and crunchy and candied," Lizzo explained in the video.
As Forbes noted, plant-based bacon products can be made from a whole range of ingredients, such as pinto beans, tempeh, seitan, coconut, or tofu — all of which are protein-rich and have considerably better nutritional profiles than the traditional kind. Lizzo is therefore smartly satisfying her cravings while also fortifying her body with the protein to fuel it efficiently.
