Since 1994, Jennifer Aniston has been stealing our hearts. Through her portrayal of the 20-something character on Friends, she popularized the layered bob aptly called "The Rachel." Before long, just about every woman wanted to be her. We lived vicariously through her high-profile relationship with Brad Pitt. And, when they broke up, we collectively mourned for America’s sweetheart.
Of course, we shouldn’t have. Aniston can take care of herself. In her September 2018 InStyle cover story — in which she looked amazing, by the way — she clapped back at tabloids that claim she can’t keep a man and that she’s too career-focused to settle down and have a baby. "First, with all due respect, I’m not heartbroken. And second, those are reckless assumptions," said Aniston. "Maybe my purpose on this planet isn’t to procreate. Maybe I have other things I’m supposed to do," she added. Go ‘head, girl.
Aniston also detailed how she stays looking so phenomenal, which includes yoga and, more recently, boxing. But diet also has to play a role too, right? Naturally. Keep reading to find out just what Aniston typically eats each day.
Starting the day without caffeine
Starting the day without a cup (or two or three) of coffee may be an impossible task for many. As Americans, we’re especially obsessed with the magical compound called caffeine, with around 90 percent of the country consuming it in some form.
In 2010, you would’ve had to pry the cup of jo from Aniston’s cold, dead hands. "You’re not taking away my coffee or my dairy or my glass of wine because I’d be devastated," she admitted to Harper’s Bazaar (via People). In more recent years, however, Aniston has pulled back the reigns on her caffeine addiction and swapped out her morning java with something much different.
"When I wake up, I have warm lemon water," the actress said in an interview with Elle. Aniston isn’t the only celebrity to embrace the citrusy beverage. Gwenyth Paltrow, Gisele Bündchen, and more believe in the magic of warm lemon water in the morning. As far as celeb trends go, this isn’t a bad one to follow. Karen Ansel, a registered dietary nutritionist told Self, "It can be a great way to work in fluids after eight hours overnight without drinking anything."
Oatmeal with this secret ingredient
Both eggs and oatmeal are common breakfast foods, but most people probably wouldn’t dream of combining the two. Aniston, however, is not most people. After her warm lemon water, she told Elle that she’ll sometimes throw together some "oatmeal with an egg white whipped in at the end." Umm, what?
Aniston actually picked up the trick from her now-ex-husband Justin Theroux. "[He] taught me that little move to get extra protein! Right before [the oatmeal] is finished cooking, you just whip in an egg white and it kind of gives it this fluffy texture that’s delicious," she told Elle. Well, you can’t knock it until you try it, right? A quick google search pulls up a variety of "egg white oatmeal" recipes and, truth be told, it doesn’t look half bad. There are even full articles dedicated to why you should try it, citing a "buttery" texture. Hmm. Are you convinced?
Her other go-to breakfasts
When Bon Appétit asked Aniston to describe her typical breakfast, she said she has more than one. In addition to her protein-packed egg white and oatmeal concoction, she detailed other favorites, saying, "Sometimes it’s a smoothie — bananas, cherries, a protein powder of some sort, almonds, cacao powder, and all sorts of other weird antioxidant stuff I can’t remember — with almond milk."
If she’s not feeling in the mood for a smoothie or eggy oatmeal, she’ll start her day with a couple of "eggs over-easy" with some extra whites thrown in for an additional boost of protein. Though not a millennial, Aniston also embraces the controversial avocado toast. She likes to mix hers with a sprinkle of "olive oil and salt and pepper." And you don’t need to worry, with an estimated net worth of $220 million, there’s no way she’ll eat herself out of Hass and home.
The same "pretty basic" lunch every day
While Aniston herself is far from basic, she admitted to Elle that her lunch is, indeed, "pretty basic." She often opts for "some form of vegetables or salad with protein." Salad for Aniston is nothing new. In fact, it’s been her go-to for years.
In the 2016 NBC special, Must See TV: An All-Star Tribute to James Burrows (via Self), Courtney Cox admitted that while she and Aniston worked together on the set of Friends they "ate the same food: a Jennifer salad." Cox told the Los Angeles Times (via Self) just what the "Jennifer salad" entailed. Essentially, it was a refashioned Cobb salad. "But it wasn’t really a Cobb salad," Aniston’s former costar explained, "It was a Cobb salad that Jennifer doctored up with turkey bacon and garbanzo beans and I don’t know what. She has a way with food, which really helps." And so, Aniston, Cox, and Lisa Kudrow ate this same lunch "together every single day for 10 years," as Cox explained.
This is what she keeps in her fridge
Open up Aniston’s refrigerator and behold! The finest caviar in the world! Actually, no. As it turns out, she hates the stuff. "You won’t find caviar [in the kitchen]. Nope, you can’t acquire that taste no matter how many people say that," she told Yahoo! Food. Not one to mince words, Aniston added, " It’s just a s***** taste." She’s not wrong.
If she were to let you rummage through her fridge, you’d be much more likely to find your standard American fare, albeit maybe a tad healthier. Raw and cut vegetables fill Tupperware containers. Staples like lettuce, chicken, and hard-boiled eggs are kept on hand.
The eggs Aniston prepares are actually from her own backyard. "We have a chicken coop. We inherited it with the property when we bought it," she explained. All total, the celeb has about 15 chickens. "To go in and pick the eggs is super fun," Aniston added.
Her secret game-changing foods are ridiculously simple
Staying healthy is no doubt important to Aniston. In an exclusive interview with Women’s Health, the actress revealed some foods that help nourish her skin and hair. While she believes in the benefits of a daily spoonful of royal jelly, she detailed what works the best, saying, "Honestly, I think just eating really good fruits and vegetables, less fried food, of course — fried food is terrible, soda is terrible. Just fruits and vegetables and healthy lean proteins and water."
Aniston also listed off her very favorite healthy snack: frozen grapes. "I like the red ones — they’re really easy and delicious. They give you that frozen crunch," she explained. The first time she tried them was at a spa and thought they were absolutely "genius." As staying hydrated is also important to Aniston, frozen fruits definitely pack a big hydrating punch and, let’s be honest, is a bit more fun than simply drinking water.
"Skinny style" alternatives to her favorite unhealthy dinners
When Theroux and Aniston were married, they both liked to share cooking duties or, as Aniston put it when speaking to Yahoo! Food, "tinker in the kitchen." While the female phenom loves her some pasta, she does look for ways to make gluttonous dishes at least a little more nutritious. "We make a pasta carbonara that’s so easy," she explained. Using the eggs from her backyard chickens, she whips up a "skinny style" dish. "We use turkey bacon instead of real bacon, eggs, and parmesan. No oil, butter or creams," said Aniston.
While butter and cream would normally work to create a thick sauce, Aniston revealed a pretty cool — and much healthier — trick. "We use pasta water to make it juicier," Aniston divulged. Though, that’s not to say Aniston won’t deviate from her "skinny style" meals from time to time. She admitted in an interview with Bon Appétit that her friend brought over "some beautiful fresh bacon." What’s a girl to do? "We went full boat on our usual lean mean carbonara. It was pretty divine," she explained.
She’s so done with fad diets
Aniston may believe in the power of warm lemon water and royal jelly, but as far as the majority of fad diets go, she’s not a fan. Well, that is, she’s not a fan anymore. When speaking with Yahoo! Food, Aniston admitted to trying some trendy cleanses, like the Grapefruit Diet, in the past. She added, "I think there was a watermelon one, and if you just think about it for two seconds, if anyone just lives on watermelon, you’re going to lose weight."
Aniston also tried Nutri-System some two decades ago and said it was actually successful. "It just happens to be astronaut food, but it still worked," she admitted honestly. Because the star eats fairly healthy all throughout the year, she doesn’t feel the need to try cleanses. During award season, she explained that she’ll usually just up her exercise and cut back on her salt intake.
Yes, she really does drink Smartwater
You’ve seen the ads. Jennifer Aniston has almost become synonymous with the Smartwater brand, for which she is an ambassador. When speaking with Shape, Aniston admitted that she really does drink the water she promotes. "I drink 100 ounces of Smartwater every day," Aniston said. Now that is an endorsement. Aniston did say that there are times when she just has "to have a Diet Coke," citing there’s just nothing else like it. Aniston’s water consumption begins first thing in the AM. "I start with a bottle of Smartwater [in] the morning," she explained to the publication, "I carry one with me all day, and at night I drink a tall glass."
When Yahoo! Food asked if she enjoyed the then-new sparkling variety, Aniston admitted, "I usually like it flat, and I like it cold." When she does drink sparkling water, though, she serves it over ice and adds a little bit of Stevia when she’s craving more flavor.
The occasional late-night snack
Although Jennifer Aniston makes room in her healthy diet for pasta, she’s not much of an unhealthy snacker, especially after dark. "I’m so not a midnight snacker," she said in an interview with Bon Appétit, "But sometimes I’ll get a frozen yogurt." As far as flavors go, Aniston named her fairly simple favorites: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee. She enjoys her occasional sweet treat with granola "if there is any to be had."
There is one snack Aniston is powerless to resist, though. "Tortilla chips. Homemade, really good, fluffy-crispy tortilla chips," the actress told the publication. Of course, you can’t just eat them plain. Detailing her favorite dips, she said she loves guacamole, or "guac" as she calls it. "If we’re trying to be good, what’s the point of having chips at all? But I love salsa on everything," said Aniston. It’s not just chips and salsa she loves. "I love Mexican food in general," the actress admitted. We totally feel you, Jen.
