You see, white is an important color to the Suffragette movement, which represents the decades-long fight for women to win the right to vote in the United States. In an attempt to counter anti-suffrage attacks, women often wore white to symbolize femininity and purity.

Gaga is following in the footsteps of several female leaders, who have worn white in honor of the Suffragette movement. A few examples include Harris’s white suit from her 2020 Vice President-elect acceptance speech, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s white blazer at the 2019 State of the Union address and Hillary Clinton’s white pantsuit at the 2016 Democratic nomination event.

Gaga paired the Givenchy cape with a matching silk face mask. She styled her platinum blonde hair in milkmaid braids (because why not?).

“I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans,” she captioned the post. “A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance, not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol.”

Thank you, Gaga. We really needed this.
