Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, may not be royalty herself, but she sure looks like she is! From her glowing skin to her svelte, strong figure, she’s clearly living her best life and putting her health and wellness first.
Obviously her trim build can partially be attributed to her athletic activities, which include 3,000 mile bike rides and amped-up marathons, according to Hello! magazine. But that’s not all she does to make sure she’s rocking her most fierce bod. In fact, Middleton’s daily diet, while it may seem no-frills and no-nonsense, is actually as healthy and balanced as you might except — without being super boring, either.
So what does the philanthropist like to nosh on for snacks? Is she all about a big breakfast in the morning, or is she a green juice girl? And what’s the one food she’s just not that into? Here’s the play-by-play on what Pippa Middleton typically eats in a day.
Growing up around the Middleton table
Growing up in the Middleton home, kids weren’t given anything special at the dinner table. In fact, they ate the same thing as their parents, who believed that kids and adults don’t need different foods. "Even from a very young age we had lots of traditional food like shepherd’s pie, liver and mash with an onion gravy, kidneys and even mussels," she revealed in an interview with The Daily Mail. "Good carbohydrate, protein and vegetables, really good for you and cheap as well. We had to eat the lot." That will certainly make sure you wind up with a diverse and sensible palate!
There was no room for being fussy, either. "We had to stay at the table until we had eaten everything. There were no exceptions. And in the end I liked everything because I had to," she continued. Clearly that no-nonsense philosophy had an impact on how she approaches eating today.
Three carb-fuelled squares a day!
Some people disagree with the idea that you should eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, in favor of eating five small meals instead. But getting three solid square meals, from sunup to sundown, is one of the core tenets of Middleton’s eating philosophy, from childhood. "We were taught to eat properly and to eat together as a family three times a day," she told The Daily Mail. No doubt that sticks with her today!
So what are Middleton’s default, go-to foods? "I try to eat wholegrain, energy-fuelled carbohydrates and three meals a day," she told Hello! magazine. Additionally, she tailors her intake as needed. "I also increase my portion sizes based on my training level, with lots of brown rice, lentils, quinoa and sweet potato, and for breakfast, porridge and rye toast," she continued. Hooray for all of those super sensible delicious carbohydrates!
A sensible but satiating breakfast
Of course Middleton isn’t going to skip breakfast, which many argue is the most important meal of the day. And knowing her, it’s no surprise that she doesn’t splurge on doughnuts, sausage or bacon first thing in the morning. "I’m pretty healthy most of the time unless it’s the weekend," she revealed to iNews. So she defaults to foods like fruit, yogurt, and muesli to make sure she’s getting adequately nourished.
There are other items on Middleton’s breakfast menu as well. "I mix it up, really, and try not to have the same thing all the time," she continued. "I love porridge, or simple things on toast. I like really delicate cheese and anything with eggs is joyful," she continued. So her morning meal really runs the gambit!
And even though Middleton is about as British as you can be, she doesn’t take tea with her toast, surprisingly. "With a little coffee, happy days," she added, rounding out her breakfast selection.
She probably hates your favorite food
There are a few foods that, when you eat them, you’re immediately transported back to childhood: birthday cake, a steaming pile of waffles, delivery pizza. So these things are scared, right?
Wrong. In fact, there’s one food that, when asked, Middleton swore she would never eat for breakfast. She told iNews, "Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup — that certainly doesn’t do it for me." How anyone can say no to pancakes with syrup is a mystery, for sure, but it’s just not Middleton’s cup of tea. Perhaps it’s because growing up, she had a much different, and yes, healthy meal every morning. When asked what she ate for breakfast as a kid, she responded, "Almost everything, but lots of porridge or boiled eggs with soldiers." And by soldiers, she means thin strips of toast.
Maybe there are other foods out there that she hates more, but it’s pretty clear you won’t find her at IHOP when she’s stateside.
She gets super conscious before events
Middleton may be adjacent to the royal family, but that doesn’t mean she’s princess-like in her approach to eating. In fact, most of the time, she makes it a point to be pragmatic about her diet as much as possible. "I don’t get fussy, though, because I enjoy food too much," she said in an interview with Hello! magazine. Clearly she has other things to do rather than obsess over every single calorie — she eats to live, basically.
However, there are times when she shifts gears and becomes super aware of absolutely everything she ingests. "[A] week or so before an event I’m quite conscious of eating really nutritious foods to store energy and I cut out alcohol, refined sugar and processed foods," she continued. And by event, she’s referring to the intense, grueling endurance events she’s known for competing in. That’s a surefire way to ensure she’s at peak performance!
All things in moderation, including moderation
Middleton is clearly in killer shape, so chances are she doesn’t veg out on the couch with bon bons every night, or eat deep-dish pizza very often. But that doesn’t mean she only eats lean protein and complex carbohydrates — her eating philosophy is more inclusive. "I grew up with the belief that good health is about moderation in all things," she recalled in a column she wrote for Waitrose (via Good Housekeeping). And that includes moderation!
Indeed, Middleton allows herself some indulgences once in a while, which she considers part of a holistic and integrated approach toward health and happiness. "I’ll be celebrating healthy living through exercise, a balanced diet and a little of the naughty stuff sprinkled in," she continued. So what does that include, specifically? "I’m talking chocolate, crisps, and the occasional glass of wine," she continued. Yum. Nice to know she’s human like the rest of us!
She’s never "attempted Atkins"
There are plenty of celebs out there who publicly endorse certain diets for weight loss and maintenance. For example, Beyoncé goes vegan when she wants to get in shape for big shows these days, and in the past she endorsed the master cleanse. And some Victoria’s Secret models follow customized diets that include specialized shakes to keep their body fat at 20 percent. That sounds like a lot of work!
But that’s just not how Middleton rolls. In a column she wrote for Waitrose (via Good Housekeeping), she said, "I’ve never done Dukan, attempted Atkins or exercised religiously seven days a week, but I do believe in making healthy choices," she mused. Those choices include "keeping refined carbs such as white bread and pasta to a minimum, and sticking to sensible portion sizes." So while she may be conscious of her figure, she’s not going to be endorsing any crash diets anytime soon.
Heartfelt for heart health
In 2016, Middleton became a book author twice-over with the release of her cookbook Heartfelt. In it, Middleton compiled over 100 recipes that are, you guessed it: heart healthy. In fact, all of the recipes were vetted by dietitians at the Heart Foundation, according to The Daily Mail.
It’s clear that some of the recipes come from the Middleton tradition. For example, there’s a recipe for beef and lentil cottage pie, according to E! News — that definitely sounds like something she’d serve for dinner. There’s also a recipe for portobello pizza, and banana, blueberry, and oat muffins. All of those bear the Middleton stamp of approval as they’re chock full of fruit and veg.
Middleton confirmed that she used her family members as guinea pigs to taste the recipes, too. But she admits she didn’t make all of them. "I would like to say I have made every single one, but I have definitely done a good 80 per cent of them. I made a lot of the dishes at home," she revealed to The Daily Mail.
Her favorite dinners with her beau
In Heartfelt, Middleton didn’t just present recipes; she also wrote about her family and what they like to eat, which includes her husband, James. Additionally, Middleton noted that she concurs with the old adage that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach — no lies detected!
In particular, Middleton described one of her favorite meals, one she made for her and her beau when they were first dating: halibut with roast tomato and herb dressing. She told The Daily Mail, "I am sure he might choose a different dish as his favourite, but it was a very special dinner for us. You roast the Halibut and serve it with lentils. It’s delicious. James loves it." Sounds mouthwatering, Pippa!
Middleton added that, while the couple do like dining out in restaurants, they prefer to eat their meals at home, while snuggling on the couch together. You can’t blame them for that!
