In 2021, Forbes listed investor and tycoon Warren Buffett’s net worth at over $108 billion, but don’t think that means he’s living a lavish lifestyle. In fact, instead of residing in a ritzy Beverly Hills villa or living in a mansion in the sky overlooking Central Park in New York City, Buffett calls a quiet neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska, his home. Buffett’s modest house, which he bought in 1958 for $31,500, was worth an estimated $652,619 in 2012, according to CNBC. "I’m happy there," the billionaire once told the BBC. "I’d move if I thought I’d be happier someplace else."
Buffett may be a wildly well-off person who could lead a flashy lifestyle if he so desired, but he chooses to keep things understated. As the businessman once said (via Forbes), "If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell the things you need."
There are a number of celebrities, however, whose jaw-dropping homes suggest they do not share that sentiment. Some might even say it seems like A-list celebs are battling it out to see who has the most impressive home. From installing a private waterpark in their backyard, a 20-car garage, and a pool that resembles a lake, these celebs are living more like kings and queens.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher show off their stunning modern LA farmhouse
It’s not every day that a celebrity couple decides to build a barn-style mansion from the ground up in Los Angeles. As Architectural Digest shared in May 2021, actors Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher spent five years creating their dream home with the help of architect Howard Backen, interior designer Vicky Charles, and their respective Pinterest boards.
In the aforementioned issue of Architectural Digest, Kunis and Kutcher invited fans into their stunning, six-acre property that they have named KuKu Farms. The space, which combines rustic ("reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and glass") and glamorous ("an extravagant 10-foot-long crystal chandelier that seemed completely antithetical to the architecture’s humble forms") elements, uses photovoltaics to keep things running. As Backen told AD, "The ideals of sustainability and regenerative farming aren’t just abstract concepts to them."
Talking about their jaw-dropping home, Kutcher shared with AD, "We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant." The massive project began when Kunis was pregnant with their daughter Wyatt. Since then, the "That 70’s Show" pair has also welcomed a son, Dimitri.
Of course, this isn’t their only property. In 2017, The Dirt reported they acquired a $10 million spot in Carpinteria. According to Variety, the Kunis-Kutcher family quarantined there in 2020 as "they await[ed] completion of their dream megamansion." Not too shabby of a setup.
Natalie Portman’s concrete and glass home is perfectly tucked away in Montecito
Serene, dreamy, and luxurious are all words that can describe actor Natalie Portman’s jaw-dropping Montecito, California home. According to Architectural Digest, "The steel, glass, and concrete home was designed by Barton Myers" and is "a hidden oasis along the Pacific coast." Perfectly tucked away on a lush hill, the property has a backyard that opens up to the never-ending Pacific Ocean.
According to ET, the estate was purchased by the "Black Swan" actor for $6.5 million, who moved to the area with her husband Benjamin Millepied, and their son, Aleph, after living in Paris, France for two years. It is a huge change of scenery for the actor, who was once living in the bustling French city. However, the outdoor/indoor space is pure perfection where views of the ocean can practically be seen from every room of the house thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, while there is also a rock garden, swimming pool, and outdoor fireplace, according to AD.
The 3,991-square-foot mansion has four bedrooms and five bathrooms, and a library filled with books is perfect for the Harvard University graduate. Surrounded by hilltops and tall trees, some of Portman’s neighbors include Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and new residents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
