The Bachelorette kicked off last night with a season like no other. Lead Katie Thurston, a “sex-positive” single who made a name for herself as a contestant on The Bachelor who brought a vibrator with her on night one, was introduced to a lineup of eligible bachelors on last night’s season premiere, which was hosted by two former Bachelorettes in place of Chris Harrison.
With the help of Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe, Katie met the whole group of guys as they filed out of the limo one-by-one, each with their own unique intro in hopes of sticking out enough to get that coveted first impression rose.
While there were plenty of stunts — including a man who faked a British accent and another who welcomed Katie into his RV — two contestants stood out to viewers the most last night, earning themselves the nicknames “Cat Man” and “Box Man.” And you guessed it: one showed up dressed like a cat, while the other appeared inside of a box like a present.
Of course, they have real names, too. Cat Man, who chose his costume to impress self-professed “cat lady” Katie, is actually Connor B., a math teacher from Tennessee. And Box Man remained a mystery for much of the episode, but was finally revealed as James, a California software salesman.
The two gimmicky intros got plenty of attention on Twitter, where Bachelorette fans poked fun at Connor’s cat costume and cracked jokes about James’ arrival. “Katie liked the guy in the cat suit and the guy in the box,” one wrote. “The POWER a man would have if he showed up in a box AND a cat suit.”
Another fan joked, “If Katie’s cat isn’t secretly in the box and the man is just his box chauffeur I’m gonna be disappointed.”
In the end, it didn’t matter how many jokes were made at Cat Man and Box Man’s expense. Their whacky antics earned them a rose from Katie, and that’s all that matters, so we’ll be seeing more of them next week — hopefully in some more low-key attire.
The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
