Gregg Leakes, husband of actor and TV personality NeNe Leakes, has passed away. Leakes, who was well-known for appearing alongside his wife on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, had been battling stage 3 colon cancer. He was 66.
“Today the Leakes family is in deep pain with a broken heart,” Ernest Dukes, publicist and family friend of the Leakes, confirmed in a statement to Decider. “After a long battle with cancer, Gregg Leakes has passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by all of his children, very close loved ones and wife Nene Leakes.”
Leakes was featured on 12 seasons of the hit Bravo reality show alongside his wife NeNe, who has been a fixture on the show since it debuted in 2008.
“We ask that you pray for peace and strength over their family & allow them to mourn in private during this very very difficult time,” Dukes concluded.
The TV personality has been battling cancer since 2018, treating it initially and celebrating being cancer free in May 2019. But earlier this year, the Leakes family announced the cancer had returned, and Leakes faced the winding road of remission.
“I’d love for everybody to pray for Gregg, that would be beautiful. Pray for his strength,” she said at the time, adding, “And pray for me too.”
Just a few days ago, NeNe Leakes shared the news that her husband’s cancer battle had taken a turn for the worse, saying that her husband was “transitioning to the other side,” in footage obtained by Page Six.
NeNe and Gregg were first married in 1997, but later got divorced in 2011. They then remarried in 2013. They share one 22-year-old son, Brentt Leakes. Brentt shared a message amid the bad news this week.
“Spend time with your loved ones every chance you get,” he wrote. “Time is so…valuable dog. I can’t express it. I’m learning the hard way watching my dad fight every day. Please go create memories with ya people.”
