We’ve Rounded Up Everything You Need to Know About Yellowstone Season 4, Including the Brand-New Trailer
Led by patriarch John Dutton, the Dutton family clashes with land developers, feels pressure from a neighboring Indian reservation and fends off attacks from numerous foes on their quest to protect their legacy.
The Kevin Costner-led series was an almost-instant hit. Nearly 5 million viewers tuned in for the Yellowstone series premiere, and the ratings held throughout the season, making Yellowstone the second most-watched drama on ad-supported cable in 2018 (after The Walking Dead). The season 3 premiere drew 4.2 million total viewers with the August finale drawing a whopping 5.2 million viewers.
In February 2020, the Paramount Network renewed the Yellowstone series for a fourth season, and we can understand why: Executive producer/co-creator Taylor Sheridan‘s tightly written drama plays out beautifully against the backdrop of the American West.
And can we talk about the season 3 finale? So many cliffhangers! Our jaws definitely hit floor in that explosive ending. If you’re like us and feeling a little desperate for more from the Duttons, you’re in luck! We’ve rounded up everything we know so far about Yellowstone season 4.
Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched the season 3 finale, stop reading and watch it NOW!
When does Yellowstone season 4 premiere?
If you’re like us, you can’t wait for Yellowstone to return! And we now know when the wait will be over and Yellowstone season 4 will start: Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021.
Previously, we only knew from the first trailer that we could expect a “new season coming this fall.”
Does the cast know when Yellowstone will premiere?
At the end of June, we got some disappointing news from one of the series’ youngest stars. Actor Brecken Merrill shared a post on Instagram saying even the cast doesn’t know when Yellowstone season 4 will start.
“It’s Sunday, and I know we’re all wanting #yellowstoneseason4.
“I can’t tell ya when it will start, but I can give you a little something to tide you over.
“Every Sunday until season 4 premieres I will post a #bts photo from our @yellowstone adventures over the years.
Why Yellowstone did not premiere in June 2021
We’ve been waiting as impatiently as you for the return of Yellowstone. Typically, the series premieres on Father’s Day—that would be June 20, 2021. But, it appears we’ll have to wait a little longer for season 4. Fan pages are filled with theories about why Yellowstone isn’t premiering in June matched with an almost equal number of fake promotional posters touting an incorrect premiere date.
We’ve done some digging to find out the real reason why season 4 is not premiering in June. Two of the most likely reasons involve a global event in Japan and a missing scene that wasn’t filmed last year during principal filming.
According to a Facebook page that recruits and schedules extras for Yellowstone, crews are shooting one last scene for season 4. “We will be back for a 2 day shoot in June!! This is a protest scene that we had to cancel last year due to snow…Work dates 6/10&6/11 must be available both dates. Night calls.”
The second reason the season is being delayed may have to do with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (being held in 2021). The Olympics kick off Friday, July 23, 2021, which would be smack in the middle of season 4. Many networks are shifting their TV schedules so viewers won’t have to choose between watching their favorite series or athlete.
When did Yellowstone season 4 wrap filming?
Season 4 of Yellowstone finished principal filming in November 2020, as mentioned in several Instagram captions from the cast. The end of principal filming means the majority of filming was completed. But there are sometimes scenes that need to be reshot at a later date.
Who’s in the cast of Yellowstone season 4?
Paramount Network series Yellowstone has a star-studded cast of talented actors, some of whom can boast a Hollywood lineage going back decades. Parade.com breaks down the actors and their roles as well as the new cast members joining series in fourth season premiering this fall.
Kevin Costner (John Dutton)
As the patriarch of the Dutton clan, John Dutton will do anything to hold on to the land his family has owned for generations. He has many that are loyal to him including his daughter, Beth and foreman Rip and many who are not including his son, Jamie and Governor Perry.
One of Costner’s first roles ended up on the cutting room floor. He was the friend in The Big Chill whose death brings a group of friends back together. His character is seen in some flashback scenes but ultimately those scenes were removed from the film. He became a bonafide movie star with his role as Eliot Ness in The Untouchables which he followed up with box office hits No Way Out, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams.
In 1990, Costner starred, directed and produced Dances With Wolves which earned him two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture.
He is also the singer in the band, Kevin Costner & Modern West.
Fun fact: Costner was actually married to Cinderella! His first wife, Cindy Silva, whom he met in college, played Cinderella at Disneyland.
Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton)
Beth Dutton is the strong willed daughter of John Dutton and doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to business or love. Rip Wheeler was her first love and for many fans, hopefully her last.
She starred opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in both Sherlock Holmes movies as Mary, Watson’s paramour and eventual wife (they marry in the second film).
Fun fact: The British Reilly once felt she was being typecast in comedy roles!
Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler)
Rip has worked for John Dutton for decades. He may be more loyal to the Dutton patriarch than his own children.
Cole Hauser comes from an entertainment family – his dad is actor Wings Hauser, his uncle is actor Erich Hauser and his grandfather is director and producer Dwight Hauser. His mother, Cass Warner, founded the production company Warner Sisters and his great-grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the original founders of Warner Bros. Studios.
Fun fact: Cole Hauser’s wife, Cynthia, is a twin. She and her sister, Brittany were the Doublemint Twins in advertisements for Doublemint gum during the ’80s. They later starred as the Wakefield twins in the Sweet Valley High series during the ’90s.
Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton)
Kayce might not be the eldest Dutton child, but he seems to be the heir apparent. He’s married to Monica, who is of a Native American Indian descent. He and Monica lived for a while on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation.
Aside from Yellowstone, Grimes is best known for his roles on the ABC series Brothers & Sisters, and films American Sniper and Fifty Shades of Grey, where he played the main character’s brother, Elliot.
In 2018, Grimes married Brazilian model Bianca Rodrigues.
Wes Bentley (Jamie Dutton)
Jamie Dutton doesn’t seem to be well liked by anyone. He recently found out that his father, John Dutton, was not his biological father at all. He and his sister, Beth, are not bosom buddies by any means.
Wes Bentley rose to fame with his role in the 1999 film, American Beauty, which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture. He is best known of his role as gamemaker Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games and various roles in the American Horror Story anthology series on FX.
Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton)
Monica might be married to a Dutton, but she doesn’t believe in a privileged life. She is an activist and teacher in her Indian community.
Prior to 2017, Asbille was billed as Kelsey Chow. Asbille hails from South Carolina and is of Chinese descent.
Fun fact: Her first television role was on One Tree Hill.
Jefferson White (Jimmy Hurdstrom)
Jimmy is the hapless ranch hand that always seems to land in hot water. After trying to make some extra cash by bronc riding, Jimmy is severely injured. John takes on Jimmy’s medical bills with the caveat that he doesn’t land himself in the hospital again. In the last season finale, Jimmy was bucked off the horse and lay prone in the corral.
White has had recurring roles on Blindspot, How to Get Away with Murder, and most recently The Bite.
Fun fact: White is an avid analog photographer.
Ryan Bingham (Walker)
Walker is the vagabond ranch hand who keeps getting pulled back to Yellowstone in one way or another. At first, he couldn’t get away from the Duttons fast enough but since he found himself again on Dutton land he’s resigned himself to his fat.
Bingham is a singer-songwriter who joined the rodeo circuit as a bull rider when he was in his teens. He has released several critically acclaimed albums and has several awards (including a Grammy) to his name.
Fun fact: Costner isn’t the only one in the Yellowstone cast with an Academy Award. Bingham scored an Oscar for co-writing the 2010 Best Original Song “I’m Weary” with T Bone Burnett for the film Crazy Heart.
Forrie J. Smith (Lloyd Pierce)
Lloyd is a seasoned ranch hand on the Yellowstone ranch and has the scars (and brand) to prove it.
He might play one on TV, but Smith is an actual cowboy and rancher. He has worked in front of the camera as an actor and stuntman and has also worked behind the camera as an animal wrangler.
Fun fact: Smith’s son, Forrest, played a younger version of Lloyd in some flashback scenes on the show.
Denim Richards (Colby)
Colby is a fan favorite. Throughout most of the past season, he denied any attraction to Teeter (Jen Landon), the female ranch hand who is quirky and odd but also skilled and attractive. After a near death experience alongside her, he decided to let his attraction to her be known.
Prior to Yellowstone, Richards starred in the Freeform series, Good Trouble. He is a classically trained vocalist and speaks German.
Fun fact: Richards counts performing at Carnegie Hall as one of his greathest achievements.
Jennifer Landon (Teeter)
Teeter is the most colorful character on the cast and with her unique speech pattern she’s also the hardest to understand. She set her sights on Colby from the get-go and he finally caved after relentless flirting.
Jen Landon is the daughter of Little House on the Prairie’s Michael Landon and starred opposite him in an episode of Highway to Heaven when she was just five. She has won three consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for her role as Gwen Munson on As the World Turns.
Landon also has a recurring role as the girlfriend of Jess LaCroix (Julian McMahon) on FBI: Most Wanted.
Ian Bohen (Ryan)
Ryan is another ranch hand at the Yellowstone. He’s also a livestock agent for the Montana Livestock Association. He was branded along with Colby and Teeter after the lynching of Wade Morrow.
Fun fact: Yellowstone isn’t the first time Bohen has starred in a project with Kevin Costner. He played a teenage version of Costner’s titular character in the Oscar nominated film, Wyatt Earp.
Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater)
Rainwater is the leader of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation. He wants to take back the land he believes rightfully belongs to the tribes and tends to butt heads often with John Dutton.
Born to a Comanche family, Birmingham was a petrochemical engineer before he got into acting. His first acting gig was for a music video for Diana Ross and made his television debut on the series Riptide.
Eden Brolin (Mia)
Mia is a barrel racer who takes a shine to Jimmy. She and fellow racer Laramie make their way into the bunkhouse and into the beds of some of the ranch hands.
Brolin is the daughter of Josh Brolin and the granddaughter of James Brolin. She is the lead singer of the group Atta Boy which released their second album last year.
Hassie Harrison (Laramie)
Laramie loves them and leaves them, even within the same bunkhouse. She hooked up with Lloyd but originally but has since switched horses midstream and became Walker’s bunkmate.
Harrison has guest starred on Hart of Dixie and The Astronaut Wives Club and was a regular on Tacoma PD.
Will Patton (Garrett Randle)
Last season, Jamie discovered he wasn’t a biological Dutton. His father was Garrett Randle, who was convicted of murdering his wife in a fit of rage after discovering baby Jamie sucking on a crack pipe while she was high on drugs. Randle, who appeared as a recurring character in season 3 has been up to a series regular for season 4.
Will Patton has had memorable turns in Armageddon and Remember the Titans opposite Denzel Washington. He was recently in the Golden Globe winner, Minari.
Expect to see more of Garrett this season. Patton has been upped to a series regular on the show.
Breckin Merrill (Tate Dutton)
The son of Kayce and Monica, Tate was kidnapped by the Beck brothers as the rivalry between the Becks and John Dutton escalated. He was rescued by Kayce but suffers PTSD from the incident.
Yellowstone is Merrill’s first television role.
Wendy Moniz-Grillo (Governor Perry)
Governor Perry is the sometimes love interest of John Dutton. Politically, they don’t see eye to eye on most matters.
Moniz-Grillo has had roles in Daredevil, House of Cards, and Kingdom, but got her start on Guiding Light.
Q’orianka Kilcher (Angela Blue Thunder)
Angela Blue Thunder is a business consultant hired by Rainwater to help better the lives of the citizens of the Broken Rock Reservation.
Kilcher got her start in entertainment learning to sing and dance when she and her mother moved to Hawaii. She began hula dancing and soon followed that with Tahitian dance, ballet, hip-hop and more. She also holds a black belt in Wushu Kung Fu.
Fun fact: Q’orianka means “Golden Eagle” in Quechua, a Peruvian Indigenous dialect and part of her father’s ancestry.
Moses Brings Plenty (Mo)
Mo is Rainwater’s everyman, serving as his driver and assistant and all things in between.
Brings Plenty has modeled for Ed Hardy and acted in Hell on Wheels, House of Cards, and The Good Lord Bird.
Moses Brings Plenty is a direct descendant of Brings Plenty, a Lakota warrior who fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn
Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau (Gator the Cook)
Gator is the Dutton’s chef and he doles out hearty fare like biscuits and gravy but also the more exotic fare like octopus that no one on the ranch asked for!
Guilbeau is actually part of the production’s catering crew and has worked on such films and shows like Jurassic World, Mindhunter, and The Maze Runner. Yellowstone is his first acting role.
Who’s new to the cast?
Jacki Weaver (Caroline Warner)
Caroline Warner is the CEO of Market Equities, the company that seeks to control the Dutton land by any means necessary. Willa Hayes (Karen Pittman) and Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway) work for Warner.
The Australian-born Weaver is best known for her roles in Netflix‘s Bird Box and the 2010 film, Animal Kingdom. She was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.
Piper Perabo (Summer Higgins)
Summer is an activist from Portland who protests the state funded police force that protects industrialized farming and the killing of animals.
Perabo starred for five seasons as Agent Annie Walker in USA Network’s spy drama, Covert Affairs. She came to national attention for her breakout role in Coyote Ugly.
Fun fact: Her parents named her after actress Piper Laurie.
Kathryn Kelly (Emily)
Emily is a vet tech who strikes up a relationship with the new cowboy.
Kelly has been featured on the ABC series, Nashville and on the Netflix series, Dolly Parton‘s Heartstrings.
Finn Little (Carter)
Carter is a young boy that reminds everyone of a young Rip. Beth takes him under her wing.
The young Australian actor will be a series regular on Yellowstonei. He has starred opposite Geoffrey Rush and has previously been featured on Harrow (Hulu) and Tidelands (Netflix).
How much do the Yellowstone stars make per episode?
Kevin Costner Yellowstone salary
Kevin Costner is making $500,000 per episode for the Yellowstone series.
Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille and Luke Grimes
The younger members of the cast reportedly make around $200,000 an episode or less.
What happened in the Yellowstone season 3 finale?
In the final 10 minutes or so of the season finale, we saw Jimmy get bucked off his horse. As he lay in the dirt of the corral, we wondered whether he’s seriously injured (again) or if he is just suffering from narcolepsy.
Then there are the Duttons. John Dutton (Kevin Costner), Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) all had attempts made on their lives. Beth was the victim of a mail bombing and both Kayce and John were broadsided in a hail of bullets.
We don’t know if Beth survived, but we’re betting she did—although she may be gravely injured. There’s no way you can replace a character like her. In our opinion, she’s one of a kind and integral to the Yellowstone show’s success.
From the beating she took from the Beck brothers’ thugs in season 2 to this, all we want is for Beth to get her happily ever after with Rip (Cole Hauser). Survive or not, when Rip finds out you can be sure the Train Station (Not sure what this means? We’ll explain later.) is going to be packed in season 4.
Thanks to technology, it looks like John survived. His hated cell phone may have saved his life, taking the slug that was aimed for his heart. Does this mean he’ll upgrade to a larger phone for extra protection in the future?
The shooters who tried to assassinate John killed the California mother whom John was helping on the side of the road, but it appears they missed her son, who was in the field searching for the lug nuts John had given him.
As a former sniper, Kayce likely survived his assassination attempt. Plus, he had a sturdy wooden desk that he tossed over as a shield. Who knew being the livestock commissioner would be so dangerous? Kayce’s shooter looked like he was a mercenary or at least a superfan of Call of Duty, while John’s shooters looked more like drifters.
The Yellowstone show delves into the season 3 cliffhanger with this video. Do you agree on the cast’s viewpoints?
Who ordered the hits on the Duttons in season 3?
All signs point to Jamie (Wes Bentley). But he might be too obvious of a suspect which means it likely wasn’t him at all. Who’s to say Jamie wasn’t a target also? Perhaps, we just didn’t see an attempt on his life—yet. Plus, if he was trying to take over the “empire” as his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), suggested wouldn’t he have targeted Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill) too?
Were all three assassination attempts related or were separate parties responsible? Was it Roarke (Josh Holloway) and Market Equities or a third unknown or forgotten foe? Maybe the bikers from the “Goin’ Back to Cali” episode? Or kin of the Beck brothers from season 2? Or was it Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher)?
— Yellowstone (@Yellowstone) February 5, 2021
In his heart, is Jamie a Randall or a Dutton?
Upon learning that he was adopted, Jamie sought out his biological father, Garrett Randall, who was incarcerated for killing Jamie’s mother. Jamie learned that Randall killed his mother in an attempt to save Jamie from a life of addiction after he returned home one night to find baby Jamie sucking on a crack pipe discarded by his mother as if it was a pacifier. Will Jamie listen to Randall’s words of wisdom? Or will he realize the life he was given was the best path for him, even if he hates John for it?
Will Mia and Jimmy stay together on Yellowstone?
Mia (Eden Brolin) gave Jimmy (Jefferson White) an ultimatum—either get back in the saddle and do the thing you love or they’re over. Jimmy makes a decision to return to rodeo, but with disastrous results. Meanwhile, Laramie (Hassie Harrison) ditched Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) in favor of Walker (Ryan Bingham), so that’s bound to cause some tension in the bunkhouse in season 4.
Are Colby and Teeter getting together on Yellowstone?
Colby (Denim Richards) resisted Teeter’s (Jen Landon) “charms” throughout most of season 3. The attack by Wade (Boots Southerland) and his son, Clint (Brent Walker) brought the two closer together. Teeter revealed a vulnerable side after the trampling, though she regained her cheekiness once Colby patched her up. The two were also branded at the same time so that’s one anniversary they can celebrate together.
What’s going to happen to Roarke on Yellowstone?
Now that John knows who Roarke is and that he’s the one responsible for Wade and Son’s harassment tactics, how will he deal with the underhanded hedge fund manager? Will Roarke turn the tables on the Duttons?
We saw Roarke fruitlessly trying to call Wade (because there’s no reception at the Train Station). Did the Bunkhouse Boys get rid of any identification and cell phones on Wade and Clint’s (Brent Walker) bodies? If they didn’t, will Roarke be smart enough to put a trace on it and discover the location of the Train Station?
What is the Train Station and where is it?
If you haven’t caught on, the “Train Station” is the place where the skeletons are literally buried. It’s in Wyoming just across the state line in “a county with no people, no sheriff an no 12 jurors of your peers,” as Lloyd tells Walker before they toss the bodies of Wade and Clint into the canyon. So take note: If you’re at Yellowstone and going to the bus depot? Good. Going to to the train station? Not good.
Who’s going to get that coveted piece of Yellowstone land?
If only we knew! After a meeting in Jamie’s office, the new owner of the coveted piece of Yellowstone is still up in the air. John was at odds with Governor Perry (Wendy Moniz) after Lynelle sided with Market Equities on the development of the land.
Rainwater and Blue Thunder revealed they would be slapping a class-action lawsuit against Market Equities. Willa (Karen Pittman) found herself in a pickle after she is accused of workplace harassment (courtesy of Beth). Not only is the business deal on the line but now so is her career and reputation. She tells Roarke to deal with this like the oil deal in Yemen which begs the question, “How did they deal with that oil deal in Yemen?” With a mail bomb, perhaps?
Is Rip really going to give Beth his mother’s wedding ring?
While it was likely meant to be romantic that Rip wanted to give Beth his mom’s wedding ring and it’s totally something Rip would do, were you as creeped out as we were with Rip literally taking his mom’s wedding ring off her cold dead body? Let’s hope he doesn’t tell Beth he had to exhume his mother to get it!
Are Beth and Rip getting married on Yellowstone?
Provided Beth survived the bombing, we hope Beth and Rip will finally tie the knot in season 4, though their path to wedded bliss is bound to continue to be a rocky one.
“Whether it lasts or not, it wouldn’t be a drama if it was constant,” Reilly said in an interview with Esquire. “I don’t think that we’re at the happy ending stage yet, but I think there’s a glimmer of happiness and where that happiness and where that peace could live, you know what I mean.”
Fun Tidbit: Astute fans noticed Beth wearing a wedding ring in the below picture but in the episode that aired she was not wearing the ring in the scene.
Does Beth survive the explosion in the season 3 finale?
While we rewatch the season 3 finale over and over looking for clues as to whether Beth survived the explosion in the finale, Kelly Reilly is dropping a few clues that make us think the answer may be yes. In a recent interview with Esquire , she opened up about what she wants to see for her character going forward.
“As an actor, especially one that’s been put through hell and back with a character like Beth, I was like, ‘What’s the end game?’ And there’s a big cliffhanger obviously at the end of season 3,” she said. “Obviously I can’t tell you whether or not Beth makes it another day, to see if she finds that peace that you talk about. But it’s an interesting question with any character. Is happiness something that is an ultimate end goal?”
Is Kayce running for governor on Yellowstone?
Kayce has had a spring in his step as he is actually enjoying his role as Livestock Commissioner. Due to his take charge attitude and subsequent success in that role, the Chairmen of the Stockgrowers Association want him to run for governor. Kayce has said time and time again that he’s no politician, but will he run for office anyway? That is bound to tick off his wife, Monica, who just wants to live a simple life. It’s also bound to tick off Jamie, who has had political aspirations all his life.
Is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone in season 4?
When asked by ET Canada about whether or not he will reprise his role for season 4, Kevin Costner said: “I can’t say. There’s an ending that you’re gonna see, hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.
“I try to make things and be a part of things that have a dramatic arc to them. Just try to enjoy it right up to the end if you can.”

Where is Yellowstone filmed?
On the Yellowstone show, the ranch is located in Montana and borders Yellowstone National Park. Seasons 1-3 of Yellowstone were filmed in over 20 locations around Utah and Montana, but due to the pandemic, season 4 of Yellowstone was filmed entirely in Montana.
Is the Yellowstone Ranch real?
The Dutton’s ranch, as seen in the Yellowstone show, is actually the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana. It’s named after Chief Joseph, who led his people across the ranch in his flight from the U.S. Army during the Nez Perce War in the summer of 1877, according to the property’s website.
But in 1914, the 2,500-acre ranch was purchased by the glass tycoon William S. Ford and Federal Judge Howard Clark Hollister, and they began turning it into “one of the great log structures of the American West,” the Ford-Hollister Lodge. After completing their work, it sat at 6,000 square feet. Then, in the early 1950s, it was sold and renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch.
The working ranch is also a vacation spot with lodging for guests. But don’t get started planning your vacation yet. Due to the production, the ranch is booked through 2021!

Casting spoilers for Yellowstone season 4
This has not yet been confirmed, but we’ve seen multiple reports that Finn Little is joining the Yellowstone cast for season 4. What role he might play has not been revealed. Many eagle-eyed fans suspect he could be an adoptive son for Beth, who revealed in season 3 that she could not have children.
What will happen in Yellowstone season 4? Are there any spoilers?
At this point, we don’t know much about what audiences can expect. There were plenty of cliffhangers at the end of season 3 that need to be answered. We’ll hopefully get more details about Jamie’s complicated history, Beth’s relationship with Rip, the other budding romances and much more. Plus, we’d like to get answers to these five questions in season 4.
—How will John exact his revenge on Roarke and Market Equities?
—Will Roarke get a haircut before then?
—Will they ever have a musical episode? If they do, we’d pay to see that!
—Will we learn more about Ryan (Ian Bohen) and his past? Will he ever find love or is he destined to be a lone wolf in the bunkhouse like Lloyd?
—Will the family ever sit down together and truly enjoy Gator’s (Gabriel Guilbeau) home-cooked meals?
