Grab the tissues, because Steve from Blue’s Clues is back! Steve Burns was the original host of the beloved Nick Jr. show, which followed him and his animated puppy, Blue, as they hunted for clues around the house and learned some important lessons around the way. Although Burns abruptly left after hosting Blue’s Clues from 1996 to 2002, he returned with a sweet message for original fans to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary.
“You remember how when we were younger, we used to run around and hang out with Blue and find clues and talk to Mr. Salt and freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff, and then one day I was like, ‘Oh hey, guess what? Big news… I’m leaving. This is my brother Joe. He’s your new best friend,’” Burns began in a video posted on Nick Jr.’s social media. “And then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for, like, a really long time. Can we just talk about that?”
In a 2002 episode titled “Steve Went to College,” Burns handed the show off to his brother Joe (played by Donovan Patton) and exited the show, prompting fan speculation about his sudden absence.
He explained that he left to pursue higher education and noted how “challenging but great” the time since has been, with an emphasis on everything he and viewers have accomplished.
“We started out with clues and now it’s, what? Student loans and jobs and families,” Burns continued. “And some of it has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know. And I wanted to tell you I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help.”
He left things off on a sweet note: “I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you … ever. And I’m super glad we’re still friends.”
Cue the waterworks!
Burns has since appeared in Nick Jr.’s on-air promotions for the Blue’s Clues anniversary, as well as a TikTok video featuring all three of the show’s hosts — Burns, Patton, and Joshua Dela Cruz, who hosts the reboot, Blues Clues & You.
