In our family, no gathering or holiday table was complete without a few “sweet salads” (as we call them) to choose from. These were the dishes that tasted like dessert, but were called a salad. Why? Well, for us, my grandma had a simple explanation. If they were salads, they were eaten with the meal, and then we could still enjoy some pie or cake too! That is definitely logic I can relate to!
These days, these sweet salads are popularly referred to as “fluffs” and we still can’t get enough. I have so many recipes for them, and never tire of finding more. I am always coming up with tasty flavor combos for every season! To this day, depending on the ingredients, I will still serve them as a side dish, but many of them are definitely more a sweet treat for the end of the meal.
This Orange Creamsicle Salad was one I created years ago for a cool, refreshing dessert on a hot summer day, but years later we have enjoyed this year round, even being requested for a family gathering at Christmas a few years ago.
What Is A Creamsicle?
The inspiration behind this fluff dessert was that beloved childhood treat so many of us would choose from the ice cream truck. The orange popsicle filled with vanilla ice cream that was synonymous with a hot sunny day. If you didn’t know, there is also a cocktail version made with vodka, cream, orange liquor, milk and simple syrup.
What Are Fluff Salad Desserts?
Sometimes when I create recipes I can forget the most common dishes in our world are brand new to others. Fluff salads as we all them usually have a base flavor from fruit or pudding and then are made fluffy with Cool Whip. They can have other various add ins such as nuts, marshmallows or even candy.

Besides being delicious, the other great things about this orange and cream dessert are how budget friendly it is and how easily it can be doubled or even tripled.
- orange Jell-o
- instant vanilla pudding
- boiling water
- cold water
- mandarin oranges
- Cool Whip
- mini marshmallows
This Creamsicle Salad has become one of my most popular recipes, both in my home and others. It makes me smile to think my grammy’s influence is living on through my food, and being shared with so many families, so I hope yours loves it too!
Best Creamsicle Salad Tips
- Do NOT prepare the pudding. You are only using the dry mix.
- Real whipped cream does not work as well. The salad will not set up the same way.
- An hour to chill is only the minimum. Overnight works too.
- When mixing the Jell-O and boiling water, make sure it dissolves completely to avoid a gritty texture.
