Forty-two-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally killed Thursday afternoon when a prop gun unexpectedly fired a live round of ammunition on the set of a new Western film entitled Rust.

Discharged by horrified producer and star Alec Baldwin, the firearm killed Hutchins (who leaves behind a son and husband) and wounded director Joel Souza. This tragedy has many individuals recalling the death of 28-year-old Brandon Lee, who was killed with a prop gun in a tragic accident on the set of 1994’s supernatural action movie, The Crow.

Lee’s family formally addressed the incident on Twitter, writing: "Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period."

Baldwin also posted about the tragic turn of events on Friday, voicing his "shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother, and deeply admired colleague of ours." The actor added that he is fully cooperating with the authorities and in direct contact with Hutchins’ husband. "My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna," he wrote.

Filmmakers like Adam Egypt Mortimer (who worked with the director of photography on last year’s Archenemy), James Gunn (The Suicide Squad), Eric Kripke (The Boys), Elijah Wood (Daniel Isn’t Real), and Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass) paid their respects to Hutchins on social media while decrying such an avoidable loss.

"I’m so sad about losing Halyna. And so infuriated that this could happen on a set," Mortimer tweeted. "She was a brilliant talent who was absolutely committed to art and to film."

My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins & her family.

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn)

Someone hurt or killed on my set is my worst nightmare. Sending love to Halyna Hutchins’ family, @JensenAckles, cast & crew of "Rust." I’m so sorry. In her memory, a simple, easy pledge: no more guns with blanks on any of my sets ever. We’ll use VFX muzzle flashes. Who’s with me?
