You’re not going to believe this one. Today Paramount+ released the first trailer for South Park: Post Covid, the streaming service’s first of 14 South Park specials. If this trailer is to be believed, South Park is about to do something it’s never done in its 24 years on the air: it’s going to show Kyle, Cartman, Stan, and Kenny as adults.

“Do you remember when we were little?” a bearded and very middle-aged Kyle says over the phone. It seems as if he’s taken over Mr. Mackey’s job as the guidance counselor. “Us friends said we’d always be there for each other when things got bad.”

“What do you mean?” adult Stan says, all graying sideburns and beer belly. “What’s happened?” Whatever the answer is, it’s bound to be convoluted, gross, and so so very stupid. We can’t wait.

“Post Covid” will mark South Park‘s third special ever as well as its third special about the COVID-19 pandemic. In September of 2020, Comedy Central premiered “The Pandemic Special” before following it with the “South ParQ Vaccination Special” in March of 2021. Both marked highs for the series. In fact, “The Pandemic Special” was the most-watched episode of the series in seven years. This is all to say that “Post Covid” has big shoes to fill. And it feels as though it’s tackling the challenge literally.

South Park hasn’t always existed in a timeless bubble. In Season 4, the boys graduated from third to fourth grade, and Season 16’s “I Should Have Never Gone Ziplining” memorably portrayed the four friends as live-action teenagers. There was even an episode that revolved around Stan meeting a future version of himself, though by the end of “My Future Self ‘n’ Me” it was all revealed to be a plot from Stan’s parents. But for the most part, Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman have always remained relatively the same age. This upcoming special seems like the first time the series will truly show these four best friends as adults.

What does the future hold? Will we see Kenny’s face? Will old Randy get another marijuana exclusive event? We’ll find out when South Park: Post Covid hits Paramount+ on Thanksgiving day, Thursday, November 25.
