Netflix has announced plans for five new scripted series to be filmed in the United Kingdom throughout 2022. The news is rather impressive and includes a new adaptation of One Day, the Anne Hathaway movie which was released in 2011. The series will feature the writing talents of BAFTA-winning Nicole Taylor, Anna Jordan, Vinay Patel, and Bijan Sheibani. It is a Drama Republic Production with Universal International Studios and Focus Features.

Based on the 2009 David Nicholls romance novel of the same name, One Day chronicled the lives of Emma Morley (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess). After spending the night together following their college graduation, the story traces their steps on the same day, each year to see where they are in their lives over 20 years. Sometimes they’re together. Sometimes they’re not. One Day was directed by Lone Scherfig from a screenplay by David Nicholls. Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott, and Romola Garai starred opposite Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in supporting roles. Unfortunately, the film didn’t so do well with critics. Despite having some fresh narrative twists, the movie only managed a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes due to its lack of emotion, depth, and insight into the source material.

Besides breathing new life into the classic Anne Hathaway movie, Netflix has also commissioned the superhero drama Supacell. The six-part series follows a group of seemingly ordinary people from South London who unexpectedly develop superpowers. The series is written by Rapman, also known as Andrew Onwudolu.

As reported by Deadline, Abi Morgan is writing a thriller about a father who is left reeling after his son goes missing in Manhattan in the 1980s. Ripley Parker is working on a show about a schoolgirl who gets released from hospital after battling anorexia nervosa. And Charlie Covell is creating a series called Kaos, which is a contemporary retelling of Greek myths. Netflix’s new catalog of series, including the Anne Hathaway starrer, has been tentatively set to start streaming next year.

Creating new content and new adaptations (like the Anna Hathaway movie) is just another way Netflix is building on the success of their UK-led shows. Speaking about the new projects, Vice President of Netflix’s UK Series Anne Mensah said it’s hard to top the virtuosity and global impact of existing, award-winning British series. But they’re definitely going to try.

Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway has a few new projects of her own on the horizon. The Devil Wears Prada star will play a leading role in a film based on the Sesame Street franchise. She will also star in an adaptation of Pamela Druckerman’s book Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting.

She has signed on to star in Apple’s scripted WeWork project titled WeCrashed opposite Jared Leto. It is based on the Wondery podcast of the same name. Anne Hathaway will also team up with Jessica Chastain to star in the psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct. The film is based on the novel Derrière la Haine by novelist Barbara Abel.
