If you’re famous in any capacity, from a B-list reality TV star to an Oscar winner, it’s pretty easy to throw integrity out the door in favor of a boatload of cash. This is especially true when it comes to celebrity-owned brands and celebrity endorsements. Who can forget Sylvester Stallone’s ill-fated high protein pudding (probably everyone), Steven Seagal’s strange foray into the world of energy drinks or Nelly’s poorly named Pimp Juice? None of these brands worked out the way the celebrity endorsers probably hoped they would. But, missteps like this don’t stop famous people from promoting products of their own.
More and more, it seems that celebrities are purchasing and endorsing alcohol brands. And while some fall short of expectations, there are several brands that – perhaps surprisingly – wildly surpass them. Whether they’re producing whiskey, tequila, gin, or even wine, a number of famous faces are making a good name for themselves in the world of liquor.
To ensure you get only the best, we’ve shared a list of the celebrity alcohol brands that have proved their worth.
Now, go make some space on your bar cart.
Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston – Dos Hombres
Max Barsness / Drizly
Founded out of a genuine passion for Mezcal by friends and former Breaking Bad co-stars Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, Dos Hombres delivers a delicious and flavorful blend of Espadin agave. The original distillation process was perfected over generations by Mezcal producers from the remote San Luis del Rio area of Mexico, where some of the world’s best agave plants are grown. On the nose, you can expect aromas of apple, mango and indigenous Mexican fruits, while on the palette Dos Hombres offers a soothing woody, smokey flavor.
Bonus: If you really want to reward your taste buds, consider upgrading to their more select Tobala Mezcal, sold in limited quantities.
George Clooney – Casamigos Tequila
It might seem gimmicky to start your own tequila brand. But, George Clooney’s Casamigos isn’t just a gimmick. The award-winning brand is beloved by drinkers and bartenders alike. While Clooney did sell the brand – for a pretty $1 billion – he is still the face of it.
“My favorite celebrity-owned alcohol brand is Casamigos Tequila. It’s pretty straight forward, as far as agave goes, but it’s still delicious and a great go-to. It’s clean and approachable without being overbearing in terms of the ‘Hollywood’ component of it.” – Gabrielle Ricord, Lead Bartender at Outpost in Goleta, CA
Jay-Z – D’Ussé VSOP Cognac
The story goes that Jay-Z was a fan of Cognac so he decided to start his own brand. While the cognac industry can be tough to crack into, given the regional parameters, Jay alongside Bacardi has managed to create a smooth option for Brandy fans, and make Cognac cool again.
“The D’ussé is smooth and controlled with a hint of fire in the alcohol on the back of the palate. The cognac has lovely aromas and flavors of dried fruits and wood. It lacks the complexity of better VSOP Cognacs. But, the mere smell of the D’ussé makes me want to throw it in a Sidecar or Brandy Sangaree.” Rachel, Drinkoftheweek.com
David Beckham – Haig Club Whisky
David Beckham endorses Haig Club, a whisky for people who potentially haven’t given Scotch whisky a chance in the past. It’s smooth, rich and is a blend of three different whisky casks.
“I was tossing back some of David Beckham’s scotch Haig Club at the inimitable London drinking den Trisha’s. I don’t remember what I thought of the whisky, but the memories it helped create give it sentimental value.” – Jack Galobich, Bartender at The Gage in Chicago, IL
Ryan Reynolds – Aviation Gin
Gin drinkers have come to appreciate Aviation American Gin, whose majority owner is “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds.
“I really respect how Reynolds became involved with the brand – after trying and really enjoying it, he became the majority owner and now admittedly is the face of the brand only – he leaves the production to the experts. I think that transparency is nice for the public and makes it feel like a true endorsement and not just a money-making scheme.” – Nikki McCutcheon, Beverage Director at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge in New York City. NY
Matthew McConaughey – Wild Turkey Longbranch Whiskey
On top of ‘celebrity-owned’ spirits, there are also a handful of top-notch ‘celebrity-endorsed’ and collaborated spirits worth taking note of. One of the best is Matthew McConaughey’s work with Wild Turkey. McConaughey served as the creative director for a few of Wild Turkey’s whiskeys, including Longbranch.
“Longbranch was the whiskey created under McConaughey’s influence. I find it intriguing based upon its aging process. Passed through white oak charred barrels, followed by a Texas Mesquite charred barrel, delivering a unique smoked profile to an iconic American whiskey.” – Sean Stangle, Bartender at Estiatorio Milos in Las Vegas, NV
Steven Soderbergh – Singani 63
Years ago, when Steven Soderbergh was filming the movie “Che” in Madrid, his Bolivian casting director gave him a bottle of Singani as a gift and he fell in love with the Bolivian spirit. He then decided to bring the product to the U.S. market.
“I’ve been crushing on Steven Soderbergh’s Singani 63 lately. It’s lightly sweet, perfectly mixable or sippable on the rocks, and a great substitute for simple crowd-friendly vodka cocktails.” – Casey Lyons, Bartender at Pacific Hideaway in Huntington Beach, CA
George Strait – Codigo 1530 Tequila
Tequila and whiskey are the most popular spirits for celebrities to endorse. That’s why it was no surprise when country singer George Strait launched a brand called Codigo 1530 Tequila. On top of being endorsed by the well-known singer, these tequilas are high-quality and delicious.
“These tequilas drink pure and smooth, my favorite is the Codigo 1530 Rosa which is made by placing the Blanco tequila in Uncharred Napa Valley Cabernet Barrels for a month. The tequila develops delicate floral flavors that I really enjoy.” – Jason Banks, Bar Manager at Krause’s Cafe and Biergarten in New Braunfels, TX
Maynard James Keenan – Caduceus Cellars
Spirits aren’t the only forms of alcohol-endorsed and owned by celebrities. Many high-profile names such as Drew Barrymore, Dave Matthews and Mario Andretti are involved in the wine world. One of the most recognized might surprise you.
“Caduceus Cellars is owned by the one and only Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool. The varieties are dark, heavy and delicious.” – Justin Monell, General Manager of BLVD & MAIN Taphouse in Las Vegas, NV
From wine to whiskey, these celebrity-owned alcohol brands have proven they’re more than just a famous face.
