French toast is excellent on its own, and it happens to be one of the most popular and sweet breakfast menu items, ranking up there with pancakes and waffles. This specific recipe takes French toast to a whole new level by adding one of the most popular and delicious spreads on planet earth: Nutella. The great part about this recipe is that anyone with a sweet tooth will love it, and it’s great for kids and adults alike. This would be a wonderfully sweet weekend surprise for the family, and there’s no doubt that it would be great to prepare for a special occasion like a holiday or birthday brunch.
Recipe developer Catherine Brookes of Blue Sky Eating has come up with some of the most fantastic and memorable breakfast recipes, and this one is no exception. "This is the ultimate weekend breakfast treat," Brookes raves. "The French toast is crisp and golden on the outside, with a soft oozy Nutella center. What’s not to love?" We would have to agree. Keep reading to find out how to make this decadent and straightforward breakfast treat.
Gather the ingredients for Nutella French toast
Who is ready to get started on this delightful, simple breakfast dish? If you are, the first order of business is to take a trip to the grocery store to get all of the ingredients. It’s always a good idea to check for things you may already have at home so you don’t purchase duplicates.
Start in the bread aisle, and grab a loaf of white bread. You will only need four pieces, so you could double the recipe or use the extra bread for sandwiches or toast. Of course, you will also need 1 cup of Nutella. Then, head to the dairy section, and grab eggs and milk. To sweeten the toast even more, you will need some sugar and vanilla extract.
Prepare the egg mixture for dipping
Now that you have purchased all of the ingredients, it’s time to start this cooking party. Grab a dish that’s big enough to fit a slice of bread, as this is also what you will use for dipping. Start with your eggs, cracking them over the side and discarding the shells. Then, pour in the milk. At this time, you can also add in the sugar and vanilla extract. Using a fork or a whisk, mix everything together well. This is the same method you would follow with any other French toast recipe, so if you’ve made French toast before, this should be like old habit.
Spread the Nutella on the bread
Now, grab your loaf of bread and the Nutella. If you want, you can use your go-to bread instead. "Brioche would be great, actually," Brookes shares. Next, spread a generous layer of Nutella on each slice of bread. If you are a lover of this fantastic hazelnut spread, you can add a little extra. Why? Because there’s no such thing as too much Nutella! Then, put the two pieces of bread together to make a sandwich, and repeat with the other slices.
While it may already look good enough to eat already, there are still a few more steps you need to take. Soon enough, this breakfast treat will be ready to devour!
Dip the sandwiches into the egg mixture, and fry them
For this recipe, you will be using a frying pan to cook the bread. Go ahead and take out a large pan, and place it on your stovetop. Add a little bit of butter or neutral oil, and kick the heat up to medium.
In the meantime, take the Nutella sandwiches, and dip them into the egg mixture. Cover both sides thoroughly, and then place them in the pan. You can do both at the same time or alternate, depending on the size of the pan. Cook for about two minutes on each side until browned. "Once the toast is golden on the outside (on both sides), it should definitely be done, and the Nutella will be melty in the middle," Brookes says. "The Nutella might start to ooze out the sides a little, too."
Slice, and serve
Once you take the sandwiches off of the heat, slice them in half. These are wonderful by themselves, but Brookes recommends serving them with a dusting of powdered sugar and some fresh strawberries. We also think they would go really well with a fresh glass of milk or cup of coffee.
These are best enjoyed right away. "[I’m] not sure this is [a good recipe] to store for later. [It’s] probably best eaten fresh and warm, as [the bread] may [get] soggy otherwise," Brookes notes.
