Todd and Julie Chrisley are not going down without a fight, and they’re hopeful they’ll emerge victorious.
One day after the two were sentenced to a combined total of 19 years behind bars for financial crimes, they vowed to appeal the decision and explained why they were “optimistic about the road ahead.”
“Yesterday was a difficult day for the Chrisley family. But Todd and Julie are people of faith, and that faith gives them strength as they appeal their convictions,” the duo’s attorney, Alex Little, told People Tuesday.
“Their trial was marred by serious and repeated errors, including the government lying to jurors about what taxes the couple paid,” Little claimed.
“Based on these issues, we are optimistic about the road ahead.”
Todd, 53, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for bank fraud and tax evasion. Julie, 49, was sentenced to seven years for her participation in the crimes. Both of their sentences will be followed by a 16-month probation period.
The “Chrisley Knows Best” stars — whose reality show and spinoff series were both canceled in the wake of their sentencing — were found guilty of multiple charges in June after being indicted in August 2019.
“The Chrisleys have built an empire based on the lie that their wealth came from dedication and hard work,” prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum last week.
“The jury’s unanimous verdict sets the record straight: Todd and Julie Chrisley are career swindlers who have made a living by jumping from one fraud scheme to another, lying to banks, stiffing vendors, and evading taxes at every corner.”
Todd and Julie, who have maintained their innocence throughout the case, previously sought less than the recommended jail time. They received way more than what they asked for but far less than what prosecutors wanted.
The couple — who share sons Chase, 26, and Grayson, 16, as well as daughter Savannah, 25 — had also filed a joint motion for a new trial on the grounds that a witness allegedly “lied” during their spring trial, which the court denied on Oct. 28.
Todd is also dad to daughter Lindsie, 33, and son Kyle, 31, whom he had with ex-wife Teresa Terry.
