World of Warcraft has added quite a few accessibility options over the years, from improved color blind modes to click and mouseover casting — but that doesn’t mean I can’t think of a few additional changes that would be very helpful. One thing I would love would be to be able to increase the size of text in things like in game mail without an addon, which of course require updating and can be difficult to configure. There are also certain quests with minigames built in like the old Kirin Tor ones in Legion that had players following a pattern on the ground — we saw an even worse version of this in Battle for Azeroth with the Calligraphy quest — that are practically undoable for someone with my specific visual impairment, and I’d really enjoy a way to tell the game please make this line brighter or make it last longer or something so I can get these turtle people to like me.

(I mean, not to interrupt WoW‘s long-running process to make players hate the in-game factions more and more as we make them like us more and more so that once we get to revered we never want to see them again.)

So this lead me to wondering — what accessibility changes would you guys find beneficial in games? Games like God of War Ragnarok are leading the change here, but who better to talk about what kinds of changes would help players more readily access these games than the people who are the players attempting to do just that? Should games have more beginner friendly difficulty options? Specific adjustments to button presses and other potential physical issues? More in game modes to help people who have vision or auditory disabilities? Or even just options to allow players to come and go more easily and not demand as much sitting in one place? Any ideas are welcome, because this is an issue we’re all going to face sooner or later.

For WoW, I think they should take a long hard look at why people use TellMeWhen, and WeakAuras, why so many people feel the game is nigh unplayable without those. How information is broadcasted, how events and actions are telegraphed, those are all design issues, that deserve a lot more thought and resources put into them.

While things are fixable with addons, I really wish I could make a lot more things larger. When Blizzard removed Full-screen mode, I had to download Prat to be able to more easily see the chat text. The issue wasn’t so much the SIZE but the font. They use a condensed font that’s really hard for me to read (and in full-screen mode, I could set the resolution so things were slightly "fatter"). I also wish the "click" range of certain objects were bigger. I have to keep mousing over some tiny thing in order to loot it or to get a quest objective on the ground. Some things are just SO hard to see. (Btw., I am visually impaired, and with computers, neither my reading glasses nor my distance glasses really helps, and tbh, I don’t want another set of glasses on top of that). What would especially help with the looting issue (though I DO appreciate AoE looting) would be to allow the loot-a-rang in current or in fact ANY dungeon. WHY is it restricted to a certain expansion?? (At least M+ has no loot so that’s something . . .) It would be so much easier than trying to find what needs to be looted. (and yes, I loot everything unless my bags are full).

When I increase the size of the UI (I have it at max) it CUTS OFF CERTAIN THINGS. For example, when I used to run keys, I had to actually turn down my UI size so I could loot the vault because the ACCEPT button would be off the screen at the size I usually kept my UI.

Also – and this is not so much Blizzard as people – I try to explain that I can’t SEE the names of mobs so when they say "kill the XYZ summoner." I sometimes ask (and sometimes don’t) to please mark. (Back when I used to raid or run dungeons a lot, I just had target macros for things I had to prioritize often). There might be a reason people ask you to mark. It’s possible that it’s hard for them to SEE the names of mobs, and to target them quickly to burn them down.

When people see my UI, they wonder how the hell I can see anything since I keep EVERYTHING huge just so I can see it – my chat box is at max size, my spellbars, etc. are as big as they can get and my addons are so huge, they seem to cover up everything. But to do otherwise would mean I couldn’t see things. THIS is the way I like to and in fact NEED to play.

Not having to do with my eyesight but I do appreciate areas where I could simply fly up and be safe. Whether it’s being able to take a phone call, chat with my guild, tab out (only have space and money for one monitor) or anything else. I don’t know why I have to risk death or have to find a SAFE spot in places like ZM. I’m just glad I am no longer a Guide in Newcomer chat on my mains (who are the ones that go to Zereth Mortis) since I was tabbing out CONSTANTLY to answer questions back then (I don’t have all the answers, but WoWHead has most, and I often copied/pasted into Newcomer chat). If I did that now (I spend quite a bit of time in ZM) I’d either be dead all the time or frustrated that I couldn’t answer many of the questions in a timely manner. I don’t see why grown adults can’t have a sort of "pause" button. If I was a parent of a small child or had to answer work calls or something, I wouldn’t be able to relax while doing SOLOABLE CONTENT, which, unlike group content, you shouldn’t have to concentrate on or have to make special time to do.

much wider range of difficulty options, ability to customise controls to any key, full colour correction options and ability to auto-win quicktime events and guards/rolls

Flight masters should have different colored exclamation points, OR a different symbol. If you’re colorblind (which I am), the yellow and green symbols are practically identical. We already have yellow and blue exclamation points, why not add red for flight and then you’ve got all the primary colors? I guess that’s really the accessibility thing that bothers me the most.

Games should always keep resolutions and UI scaling in mind. I’ve used a 1.05 scale on the default UI for years because it was just slightly too small for me to comfortably read. Then they redesigned the UI and forgot not everyone is running in 2K and didn’t bother doing proper downscaling for the UI so now the reverse was true, the UI was ridiculously oversized and took up too much room for me. Had to use an addon to get the old UI back.

I’m looking at the complete upcoming UI overhaul with trepidation because it looks like they’re going with the Asian MMO trend of everything being minimal and mostly bland, texture-wise, relying simply on color gradients only which honestly looks blah to me. I’ll give it a shot, but I’m hoping they remember that not all of us has perfect eyesight and will include a proper scaling feature.

I think a quest automation button for certain quests (like Calligraphy) would be really useful. I mean, we have magic, right? Can’t we just wave our hand and the line draws itself for the turtles?
